While visiting hilltribes at Pak Pai village A.Fang, Chiangmai Province
, His Majesty the King accompanied by the Queen had found from people in the area that Doi Angkhang had cold climate and the majority of hilltribes grew opium poppy but still poor moreover; they did slash and burn and shifting cultivation which would bring disaster to the country in the future.
As The King has known that hilltribes had an income from growing opium the
same with they had grew peaches also Kasetsart University has done the research
about temperate fruits therefore; His Majesty The King gave his private
fund 1,500 baht for buying a piece of land at Doi Angkhang. After that The
King had command to established The Royal Project Foundation in 1969 by
under the directorship of H.S.H. Bhisatej Rajani as the chairman of Royal
Project which mainly working on research about temperate fruits, flowers
and vegetables to be the sample for the agriculturists to do for their living.
Later H.M. naming it “Royal Agricultural Station Angkhang”.
Location Weather Population
Royal Agricultural Station Angkhang located in Ban Khum Village, M.5 Mae
ngon Sub district, Amphure Fang, Chiang Mai Province and average point above
sea level is 1,400 meters .The agricultural research area in the station
covers 1,989 rai (318.24 hectare) and there are nine villages
that the station take responsible which include Ban luang, Ban Khum, Ban
Nor lae , Ban pang Ma, Ban PaKa , Ban khob Dong, Ban Pa Dang , Ban Sinchai
and Ban Tamngob moreover; in these villages have four tribes of people Thai
yai, Black Lahu , Palong , and Chinese yunnanese . Furthermore; Doi Angkhang
has cool weather all through the year which average temperature is 17.7
degree celsius for highest temperature is 35-38 degree celsius on April
and lowest on January is -3 degree celsius and average rainfall 2,075 mm.
Three main implement of station tasks are :
1.Research on Highland Agriculture
Being 1,400 meters above sea level, the temperature at The Royal Agricultural
Station Angkhang is cool all year round which makes this station the main
research station for temperate fruits, flowers, medicinal plants such as
peaches, pears, persimmon, kiwifruit, blueberry and strawberry and temperate
flower over 50 kinds like roses, begonia, azalea and herbs. Research also
includes fast growing plants both local and international breeds such as
various kinds of bamboo, Chinese tea, linseed and wheat.
2.Promoting and Training Tasks
The Royal Agricultural Station Angkhang is one of Thailand most important
center for highland crops growing therefore; in each year there are a lot
of public, private agencies and farmers have visited Angkhang station. Thus;
Angkhang station has established training center to publicize highland agriculture
technology to train students also officers all through the year.
3.Career Development and Extension Tasks
Palong, Yunanese and Black Lahu are three tribes that the Royal Project
Foundation and other government sectors, through The Royal Agricultural
Station Angkhang, have developed and improved their occupations. Main
important activities include the development of water resources, plantation
planting, the promoting of growing proper temperate fruits, vegetables,
cut-flowers, tea and strawberry and social awareness in conserving the
natural environment and reforestation. Other development activities introduced
are such as bamboo weaving training, dolls making from ebukae grass, co-operation
establishment, conversation awareness program for community development
activities ranging from environmental conservation, social conservation
of typical garment, proper trash handling, and preparation for agro tourism
in villages. At present other than cash crops grown, farmer also obtain
extra cash of approximately 60,000 baht per household from growing temperate
fruits, flowers and sales of handmade souvenirs to tourists.
and Development Section is working under Angkhang Royal Project Development
Center which take an action on promote highland agriculture work for the
tribe people in 5 main villages and 4 more extra villages. They grow different
kind of crops like organic vegetables, temperate fruits, ornamental flowers,
organic tea, herbs, field crops and raise an animal. All these promoting
crops are certified in various standards for example the Organic Thailand
certification from Department of Agriculture for organic vegetables, tea,
herbs and coffee moreover; GAP and GMP are the certification that crops
and tea factory at Angkhang station have got to certified our standard.
the tourism, Angkhang Royal Project Development Center has assisted the
tribe by training about food safety, handicraft work and being local guide.
Furthermore; there are more activities which related with reforestation
and environmental preservation like vetiver grass planting, making liquid
organic fertilizer using in farmer field, growing community forest for multipurpose
in the villages and make firebreaks to stop fire in summer season.

under the national and international standard together with the conservation
of environment to continue the sustainable development in the future.
